Hello! My name is Anita Mumm and I’m a freelance editor based in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. With nearly a decade of experience in the publishing industry, I help writers attain their best work, gauge the marketability of their books, and learn to approach agents and publishers effectively. My clients span the gamut from bestselling authors to first-time novel writers, and I work with both traditionally published and indie authors. (Read what my clients have to say here.) It’s such a thrill to support writers on the journey to their creative and professional goals. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself: I get to read for a living?

Before starting Mumm’s the Word, I worked in submissions and foreign rights at Nelson Literary Agency, where I had the honor of discovering NYT bestseller The Darwin Elevator by Jason M. Hough (Del Rey), international bestseller The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann (Greenwillow/HarperCollins), Edgar Award nominee Eddie Red Undercover: Mystery on Museum Mile by Marcia Wells (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), and others. I gained international perspective as NLA’s foreign rights specialist, coordinating deals for clients’ books to be translated and published abroad. Working for a top-notch agency and its authors was an incredible experience and it formed the foundation for my current role as an editor and publishing mentor.

Prior to joining the publishing industry, I was an English as a Second Language teacher at universities and nonprofits around the world, and I still enjoy teaching ESL part-time when I can. I teach creative writing classes and workshops as well. For my schedule and a list of upcoming conference appearances, please visit my Events page.

When I’m not editing, you can find me curled up with a book in the corner of my favorite coffee shop, or hiking a mountain trail near my home. I also enjoy traveling and studying languages. I am passionate about helping those caught in the international refugee crisis; recent projects include teaching at a school for Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala, India, and working at the refugee camp known as The Jungle in Calais, France. I love complex characters and thought-provoking stories that keep the pages turning fast. Also on my wish list: stories that challenge the publishing industry to reflect the many levels of diversity in our world. I’m a fan of Sherman Alexie, Stacey Lee, Laini Taylor, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Sara Farizan, to name a few.

Thank you for visiting my site, and I hope we’ll have a chance to work together.
